about

Incendiary single from the forthcoming Tolika Mtoliki album from The Brother Moves On.

“You Think You Know me” re-visits and re-inserts Mongezi Feza’s classic anthem “You Ain't Gonna Know Me Because You Think You Know Me" into the volatile context of South Africa’s inheritance of corruption, Covid state violence and capture.

The songs on the forthcoming album Tolika Mtoliki are critical shards of a fractured sonic, social and political inheritance. They are the sound-work of the elders – Mongezi Feza, Johnny Dyani, the Malopoets, Batsumi, and Philip Tabane, and they come with a blessing from Moses Taiwa Molelekwa. Called into the circle for this session, they speak old wisdom in new voices, and what they have to give is not measured in distance from a so-called original version. These songs are not reducible to reference recordings, nor to staff notation. They are spirits of sound, summoned from the past for the sake of the present, taking up old roles as heralds of a mended future.

Once again, as before, they announce a work of healing.

lyrics

You Think You Know Me

You think you know me
Bishop Tutu hugging, doves flying, candles lighting, TRC bullshit liking
You think you know me

You think you know me
But you don’t remember who you married, where you married, what you married, but now you are married
You think you know me

You think you know me
Eish I hate COVID yazi, social distancing, PPE tendering, yoh lent isphete, Doctors dying, but some of you call it the flu, yoh but we dying hey
You think you know me

You think you know me
Fire pool swimming, I want my day in court, but I’m not coming to the Zondo commission, after sex, niece raping shower domkop
You think you know me

You think you know me
With your Mr McDonalds I’m loving it, it’s a new dawn, I once knew a dawn, I used to use dawn in the nineties, can I put a new dawn on these ashy bloody Marikana hands
You think you know me

You think you know me
You 5G fearing, liberation party cheering, conspiracy theorist, vegan fascist, purist, racist, classist, bigots that still run with homophobic tendencies
You think you know me

You think you know me
While your multicoloured flag asks hoekom, why, load four, load shedding Eskom shedding the load, of townships still paying for black hardship, electronic reparations, at least it’s not the hardship of being taken on a ship to America
You think you know me

You think you know me
You think you know me
While you place Enoch Sontonga's prayer next to Die Stem, a Nazi war crime next to a prayer, For God to save Africa, maybe that’s the problem, God never saves Africa
You think you know me
You think you know me
You think you know me
You think you fucking know me, that’s the problem
